His early childhood in Irvine sowed seeds of his social activism as he witnessed the discrimination suffered by the Mexicans there. He also became a vegetarian while still a teen. Musically, his journey started in elementary school with a friend, Tim Commerford. He played guitar for Juvenile Expression while in junior high school and several other bands later on, before teaming up with three other players to form Rage Against the Machine. The band got massive airplay for its politically charged music and De la Rocha’s activism took him to the floor of the UN in 1993. He later left the band and went solo, before the reunion of Rage Against the Machine in 2007. He has featured in several collaborations vocally or playing his guitar.
