Richards began her career as a member of the pop trio TSD. After the release of their second single “Baby I Love You,” they were dropped by their record label Avex. She then worked as a receptionist for seven months, earning the title of temporary worker of the month in May 1997.

After Richards and her fellow bandmate Ian “H” Watkins resigned during the final leg of their final tour, the two continued to perform as the duo H & Claire. The pair found success with their debut single “DJ,” which peaked at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart, and their next two singles, which both charted in the top 10.

While the duo had initial success, their album Another You, Another Me, released in 2002, did not chart well. Richards also co-hosted SMTV Live in 2002 with Brian Dowling and Tess Daly.

She took a musical hiatus to plan her wedding to Steps dancer Mark Webb. H & Claire split up in 2003. Richards wanted to take a break from music and focus on other projects after leaving her music career; she was set to release her debut solo album, but due to falling pregnant, Richards decided not to pursue music any further. She announced on Twitter in 2013 that she was considering producing a solo album in response to the success of Steps.
