Born in Ontinyent, Spain, Ferrero began playing tennis at age 7 with his father, Eduardo Ferrero who often traveled with him.

Ferrero made his professional debut in 1998 by reaching the finals of his first Futures tournament in Italy. He also won two Futures events in Spain and ranked No. 345 that year.
