About Minnie Bruce Pratt:
The Sexual Minorities Educational Foundation has Minnie Bruce Pratt on its honorary board. She has formerly held positions at Shaw University, Grommet Machine, Fayetteville State University, and Syracuse University.
She attended The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to study English literature. Additionally, she attended classes at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. She attended Bibb County High. She was born in Centreville, Alabama, but until her death, she resided in Syracuse, New York.
She established a standard for white lesbian anti-racism activism. She wrote about unity and revolution well, but her actions were far more potent.
She had a heart for her community, kids, and friends. She planned and participated in many more street demonstrations than I would ever go to. She was a fighter, a teacher, and a patient person. She also had a lovely laugh.
Tributes:
“Minnie Bruce Pratt died today. She was a sweet poet, one-time partner to Leslie Feinberg, and author of the book S/He.
For me, though, she will always be the beautiful elder femme who recognized the baby femme I was. I was cooing over the long line of buttons on the dress Leslie had just bought her, and she smiled and posted my cheek and said, “One femme knows another, darling.” The dress was the color of the cherry leaves just out my window.
Now one of our Mighty Dead, may her life and works ripple like waves in a pond. Donations in her name may be made to the Friends of Dorothy House in Syracuse, NY.”
