Jonathan Sheppard obituary
Jonathan Sheppard, a trainer who earned a place in history, passed suddenly on Sunday at his retirement residence in Hollywood, Florida, reportedly due to Lyme disease complications. He was 82.
Fans of Saratoga racing will most likely remember Sheppard as the jockey who, from 1970 through 2015, won at least one race there every year.
Additionally, his horses broke records, and as a result of their racing accomplishments, he was elected to the Hall of Fame for horse racing in 1990. In addition, he presided over the National Steeplechase Association from 2004 to 2006, and for his achievements to the sport, he received the F. Ambrose Clark Award from that organization in 2013. He was successful as a Thoroughbred horse breeder as well.
