Dame Gladys Constance Cooper DBE (born 18 December 1888 in London, England, died 17 November 1971 in London, England) was an English actress whose career spanned seven decades on stage, in movies, and on television. She began performing on stage as a youngster in Edwardian musical comedy and pantomime, and by the beginning of the First World War, she was acting in serious parts and silent films. She also worked as a manager at the Playhouse Theatre in New York City, where she appeared in a variety of roles from 1917 until 1933. Cooper began receiving critical acclaim in plays by writers like as W. Somerset Maugham and others as early as the 1920s. Throughout the 1930s, she maintained a consistent presence on both the West End and Broadway stages. Cooper achieved success in a variety of character parts after relocating to Hollywood in 1940. She was nominated for three Academy Awards, the last of which was for her performance as Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady (1964). In her latter years, she continued to combine her theatre and cinema professions, appearing on stage until her death in the same year she was born.
