George Jones was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. Jones achieved international fame for his long list of hit records, including his best-known song “He Stopped Loving Her Today”, as well as his distinctive voice and phrasing.

For the last twenty years of his life, Jones was frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. Country music scholar Bill Malone writes, “For the two or three minutes consumed by a song, Jones immerses himself so completely in its lyrics and in the mood it conveys, that the listener can scarcely avoid becoming similarly involved.” Waylon Jennings expressed a similar opinion in his song “It’s Alright”: “If we all could sound like we wanted to, we’d all sound like George Jones.”

The shape of his nose and facial features earned Jones the nickname “The Possum”.

Jones was born and raised with his brother and five sisters. His father George Washington Jones, worked in a shipyard and played harmonica and guitar while his mother, Clara played piano in the Pentecostal Church on Sunday.

Jones married his first wife, Dorothy Bonvillion, in 1950, and was divorced in 1951. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was discharged in 1953. He married Shirley Ann Corley in 1954. His second marriage ended in divorce in 1968; he married fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette a year later.

Years of alcoholism compromised his health and led to his missing many performances, earning him the nickname “No Show Jones”. After his divorce from Wynette in 1975, Jones married his fourth wife, Nancy Sepulvado, in 1983 and became sober for good in 1999. Jones died in 2013, aged 81, from hypoxic respiratory failure.

On March 6. 1999. Jones was involved in an accident when he crashed his spotty utility vehicle near his home. He was taken to the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In May the same year, Jones pleaded guilty. The crash was a significant turning point as he explained to Billboard 2006.

On March 29,2019, Jones was rushed to hospital with a respiratory infection. Months later, On May 21, Jone was hospitalized again for his affection and was released five days later. Jones died on April 26, 2013and was buried in Wood lawn Cemetery in Nashville.

Jones signed with United Artists in 1962 and immediately scored one of the biggest hits of his career, “She Thinks I Still Care”. His voice had grown noticeably deeper during this period and he began cultivating the singing style that became uniquely his own. During his stint with UA, Jones recorded tribute albums to Hank Williams and Bob Wills and cut an album of duets with Melba Montgomery, including the hit “We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds”. Jones was also well on his way to gaining a reputation as a notorious hell-raiser. In his Rolling Stone tribute, Merle Haggard recalls.

Jones began the transition to the new polished ‘Nashville Sound’. With ‘Accidentally On Purpose’, ‘Family Bible’, and the #1 Hit ‘Window Up Above’, he made that transition, and successfully. His voice was maturing more and more and by 1962, his voice was completely his own, and he scored two more #1 hits (1961’s “Tender Years” and 1962’s “She Thinks I Still Care”). After switching to United Artists in 1962, Jones had great success; however, after “She Thinks I Still Care”, he wouldn’t find another number 1 until 1967.

“Tennessee Whiskey” is the title of a country song written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove. It was originally recorded by American country music artist David Allan Coe for his album of the same name Tennessee Whiskey, whose version peaked at number 77 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1981. George Jones’ 1983 version of the song was included on his album Shine On and reached number 2 on the Hot Country Singles chart.

The song has been covered by several artists, the best-known version is by Chris Stapleton, whose breakout performance of the song at the Country Music Association (CMA) Awards with Justin Timberlake propelled the song to a greater level of popularity. Stapleton’s version of the song has been certified 6× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
