As the accident occurred, the authorities rushed to the scene and identified the victim as a 32-year-old man from Rocky Mount named Robert Lee Jones Jr., driving the back Chevrolet southbound on Highway 301. In contrast, the other victim was identified as a 28-year-old woman named Emoni Shakayla Kee, driving a white Honda Accord northbound.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred due to the high speed of the Chevrolet Impala driver when he crossed the center line and a head-on collision with the Emoni Shakayla vehicle. The crash was so intense that both cars caught fire instantly, and drivers died at the scene.
