Bernadette Peters was married to Michael Wittenberg from 1996 until his death in a helicopter crash in 2005. They were married for 9 years and did not have any children.

Wittenberg was an investment adviser and a graduate of Yale University. He was also a member of the board of directors of the New York City Opera.

He died in a helicopter crash in Montenegro on September 26, 2005, while on a business trip. He was 43 years old.
