April Hunt is the stepdaughter of Iman Khalid Griggs, an ardent supporter of Darryl Hunt during Hunt’s fight to have his murder conviction overturned.

April Hunt and Darryl Hunt were married for a couple of years but the date they married is obscure to the public.

In September 2014, April Hunt filed a domestic violence restraining order against Darryl Hunt, according to court documents filed in the Forsyth County Hall of Justice. The complaint stated he allegedly “talked about how worthless he is and [that he] should die”. (Hunt’s lawyer, David Hough, denied those claims at the time.)

Darryl Hunt was an African-American man from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He spent nearly 19 years in prison after he was convicted of raping and brutally murdering Deborah Sykes, a copy editor at The Sentinel, an afternoon newspaper in Winston-Salem that closed in 1985.

In December 2003, Hunt was released from prison after DNA evidence led police to Williard Brown, who confessed that he killed Sykes. Hunt was exonerated in 2004, and Brown pleaded guilty to Sykes’ murder.

Darryl Hunt killed himself on March 13, 2016, at age 51.
