Department of Foreign Affairs issued a statement confirming the death of Albert del Rosario. DFA’s statement disclosed that the 83-year-old died while en route to San Francisco, U.S.
The statement didn’t specify the death cause of the former Foreign Affairs Secretary.
According to the foreign ministry, Del Rosario was “a steadfast supporter of safeguarding and advancing national security and promoting the rights and welfare of Filipinos.”
While paying tribute to the late government official, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo wrote on social media, “Albert was a consummate diplomat and an inspiring leader who oversaw the DFA with honesty and an unwavering dedication to the public service.
The late diplomat was “a staunch advocate of protecting and advancing national security and promoting the rights and welfare of Filipinos,” the DFA remarked.
He was best known for his assistance in the nation’s landmark arbitral victory against China on the West Philippine Sea issue.
Del Rosario persisted in speaking out against Chinese invasions in Philippine waters even after he had left his position as DFA chief and urged successive administrations to keep defending the nation’s borders.
Albert del Rosario Career
The Manila native formerly served as the Philippine Ambassador to the United States under the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
He received the Order of Sikatuna with the Rank of Datu from Arroyo in 2004, given to people who have contributed “exceptional and meritorious services” to the nation.
Del Rosario was also the chair of Stratbase ADR Institute for Strategic and International Studies. It is a think tank that conducts in-depth analyses of the political, social, and economic factors affecting the Philippines and the Indo-Pacific region.
The group expressed sadness over losing its leader. They described him as “personified the highest level of statesmanship, integrity, and love of country.”
“He has been a champion of democratic principles and an international system based on rules that ensure lasting stability, peace, and prosperity for all,” the Stratbase ADR said in a statement.
“He believed that diplomacy is an invaluable equalizer in international relations and that each state had an equal voice in the global community as a whole despite their economic, political, or military capabilities,” the statement continued.

Born on 14 November 1939, Albert del Rosario was a Manila. Luis del Rosario and Amparo Ferreros were his parents.
The late diplomat’s great-grandmother, Teresa Sempio, was reportedly a sister of Felipa Sempio, the mother of Gregorio del Pilar.
Similarly, Del Rosario’s grandfather, Judge Simplicio Sempio del Rosario, was a delegate to the Malolos Congress.
Del Rosario attended Xavier High School in New York. Afterward, he enrolled at New York University and graduated with a degree in Economics.
